GOAL SETTING IN LIFE: HOW TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN
Usually when I write or talk about goals, I focus on fitness. However, goal setting can certainly be applied to any aspect of your life. But why is it so important? Well, without a clearly defined goal, we can have hopes and dreams but we won’t see things happen without setting goals and having a plan to reach them. I started understanding goals almost seven years ago when I had quite a bit of fat to lose. I never wrote them down, but I knew what I wanted and I kept plugging away at my goal. Over the years, my goals in fitness changed and so did my habits and direction. Fitness seems to come pretty naturally to me. I enjoy it, but there are some things I don’t enjoy, but the end result (goal) will be beneficial to my life (and the life of my family).

Why goal setting is important and how it just changed our lives again…

Last year, I sat down and decided to set some pretty lofty goals: 1. No more credit card debt. 2. No more car debt. We made the very difficult decision to trade in my beautiful 2013 Yukon XL SLT for a much older 2006 Volvo XC 90. Now don’t get me wrong, my Volvo is nice. The Swedes make a nice car! But it wasn’t my Yukon XL. It had all the bells and whistles…and my “new” car didn’t. But I chose to focus on the goal. We were going through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, and we knew it was only a small part to the bigger picture. My husband did all the work on the budget, of course asking for my input, and we now had a plan in place.
When you make the decision to pay off debt, you sometimes have to make even tougher ones. I constantly had to remind myself of Dave’s line of “Live like no one else so that you can live like no one else.” It was hard giving up meals out, date nights, trips, all the clothes, and much more…but it allowed us to get really close to our goal by the end of 2017. We were also debating throughout the year if we should sell Joe’s truck (it was already paid off) and use that money to pay off debt and buy a less expensive truck for him.
GOD REALLY DOES HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR
On December 28, 2017, Joe’s truck was parked at work and a rogue Prius t-boned it as it sat in the parking lot…To give you an idea of just how funny it is, Joe’s truck was a Dodge Ram 3500 dually. It was huge….and a tiny Prius was able to total it with one hit. Yep. So all that back-and-forth of should we or shouldn’t we was decided by God and the man who fell asleep driving a Prius. We settled with an insurance company instead of having to sell.
While we were not perfect, we were able to pay off approximately $30,000 worth of debt leaving us with only a house payment and an RV payment. (Joe lived in it for a couple of years while he was stationed in SC and we were living in NC, but now we’d like that gone too.) It’s amazing what making a plan and putting it in to action can do. I remember watching the videos and thinking, there’s no way we can do this. No way we can pay off that much debt let alone do it in such a short amount of time, but we did and I feel like God really honored that.
YOU CAN DO IT TOO
You can definitely do what we did, but you can also apply the concept of setting goals to any and every part of your life. We humans are definitely creatures of habit. We don’t like to get out of our comfort zone and we really don’t like the idea of change most of the time, but when you want something, especially something worth it (paying off debt, losing weight, determining to be more spiritually fit…whatever) you go for it! And that’s what we did. We are continuing to use the principles we learned in the classes to continue to plug away at the house and RV.
