BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU…IT’S NOT WEIRD

LAST WEEKEND

Last weekend I attended a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar. I ended up working with my husband for most of the afternoon, and we got lots of great pictures of us together. I was so excited: 1. We don’t have a lot of pictures of us together. 2. I don’t have a lot of pictures of me training. So it was perfect. I couldn’t wait to share them. They were funny, mostly because I’m so much smaller than my husband, and the photographer had gotten me in a more dominant position.

I wasn’t expecting the message I got from a friend: “…if I ‘practiced’ w my husband like this I don’t know if we’d make it home to a private spot fast enough”…Then some laughing emojis. And of course I laughed because it was funny…but I never for a moment thought of it any way other than Jiu Jitsu.

IT’S NOT WEIRD…

I think people have misconceptions about BJJ, and I just want to clarify. I train like this all the time…It’s not weird unless you make it weird. And since the people I train with are cool, and not making it weird, we’re not making it weird. lol

WE GET CLOSE

I do get that BJJ is a pretty intimate sport. By intimate, I mean that you are really close to your training partner for the most part. We sweat all over each other, and find ourselves in interesting positions. I assure you, they’re not comfortable, and we are all working to get out of those positions.

Why do I like such a “weird” sport? It makes me think. It challenges me both physically and mentally. And while I’m in no shape to take on huge men, I’ve learned lots about self defense if I do get into a bad situation. I could, at the very least, earn myself some time until someone could step in to help.

YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY TRY

So, if you’re not familiar with BJJ or any martial art, I definitely recommend finding one and trying it out. I’ve shared before how my husband started training Krav Maga a couple of years ago. “Fighting” is something we enjoy doing together. In fact,  I’m proud to say that our whole family enjoys training now…including my Jac who started last month. (I am so proud of her.)

I hope to share more BJJ posts in the future. FYI, I’m not trying to be mean to the person who messaged me after my posting the pictures. I just had to share incase she’s not the only person who thought that. 🙂

Until next time…
