Everyone has a journey on their road to fitness – it’s rare that someone is just born into it. Each one is unique, and here’s my own.
My fitness journey
I’ve never been athletic. I’ve never been fit, until now.
It took two pregnancies, and over 40 pounds of weight gain for me to get in shape. The first time I tried losing weight was after the birth of my daughter. It was a very traumatic experience: an emergency c-section (wasn’t awake for it), a 12 day NICU stay, brain damage for my daughter, a house that wouldn’t sell before our move, a new place with no friends or family just a month after giving birth, and battling depression from all of the listed events.
Shortly after arriving in New York, I ordered P90X because I mean, have you seen the infomercials? Who wouldn’t want to look like that?
So about two months after having my daughter, I felt ready to lose the rest of that baby weight. I lasted about two and a half weeks before I stopped. I quickly got discouraged because my incision site hurt from the core work. So I just quit. I was within six pounds of my pre-pregnancy weight which wasn’t too bad considering I gained 40 pounds during that pregnancy. But once I quit, I stopped caring at all and ended up gaining weight. I settled in at the heaviest I had ever been in my life. I tried running, but my weight didn’t budge.
Just after Jacqueline (my daughter) turned 2, I found myself expecting our second child. I didn’t want to endure another c-section, so I looked for a doctor who was supportive of a vaginal birth after cesarean or VBAC.
Finding something that worked for me
While I was pregnant, I decided I wanted to get back in shape. And as the Lord would have it, a friend from high school that I hadn’t spoken to since high school contacted me about joining her challenge group. I told her that I’d love to, but that I was very pregnant. I told her that I would stay in touch and join her after my delivery.
I held true to my promise. After my six-week appointment, my doctor cleared me for working out, and I started 10 Minute Trainer THAT DAY! (By-the-way, I gained 40 pounds with my second pregnancy, so I weighed over 50 pounds more than when I first started having babies.) About a month later I began drinking Shakeology and doing P90X. I completed it for the first time. I dedicated 90 days to something. I lost 14 pounds and felt great, but I knew that I needed more. So I turned to Turbo Fire which made me fall in love with working out and fitness.
Becoming a Trainer and Coach
About a year later, my husband suggested that I become a Turbo instructor since I loved it so much. A few months later I made the decision to become a personal trainer and signed up. Then I got certified to teach Insanity.
I can’t tell you how different my life is than I ever imagined it. I’ve never been healthy. I’ve never cared about my fitness or working out until now. I can tell you that I’m in way better shape than any other point in my life. I have the energy to take care of my kids which I do alone most of the time because of my husband’s job.
I think many moms are afraid to take time for themselves and that it’s selfish to dedicate time to working out, but it’s not. It gives me the energy to keep up with the kids as well as the strength to pick them up as well as groceries and laundry. I used to suffer from constant pain, basically everywhere. Now I feel strong and capable of taking care of most any task. I have a passion for helping others. I know where you’re coming from when it comes to losing weight. I understand the struggle. I understand other life demands, but I also understand support and know that anyone can do this. Let me help YOU!
